Salem High School Senior Kaytlyn Justo Receives Full Scholarship, Chosen as 2019 Jack Welch Scholar

Jul 31, 2019

Salem State University selected Salem High School graduate Kaytlyn Justo as the recipient of the Jack Welch Scholarship for the class of 2023. Justo graduated from Salem High with a 3.8 GPA in June.

The Jack Welch scholarship provides full financial assistance to a Salem student who enrolls in the university鈥檚 Bertolon School of Business full-time.

The scholarship will cover all expenses for Justo during her four years at Salem state, including on-campus housing as well as the cost of a laptop, which came as a surprise to Justo, who plans to major in accounting at the university.

鈥淢y dad is a single parent and I knew that the only way that I was able to attend college was by winning this scholarship,鈥 Justo said. 鈥淚 do not have a laptop, but I鈥檓 in desperate need of one. I didn鈥檛 know I鈥檇 be receiving one, so I鈥檓 really grateful.鈥

All Jack Welch scholars must remain in good academic standing in their respective departments by maintaining a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and participate in activities required of all Jack Welch Scholars, including meeting with and being mentored by the Dean, faculty and Jack Welch cohorts on a regular basis; making presentations to local high schools and civic groups; and attending the Salem State University Foundation鈥檚 annual scholarship reception.

Dean of the Bertolon School of Business Kathleen Barnes had a role in selecting Kaytlyn as the Jack Welch Scholar.

鈥淲e are very much looking forward to having Kaytlyn join Salem State as its newest Jack Welch Scholar,鈥 Barnes said. 鈥淜aytlyn is a good student who we know will excel in her studies.鈥

The Jack Welch Scholarship was established in 2005 through a transformative gift from Jack and Suzy Welch. Mr. Welch, who was born and raised in Salem, gave the gift with the intention of encouragement and inspiration towards the study of business. Mr. Welch was a chairman and CEO of the General Electric Company and grew the company from a $13 billion to a $400 billion global enterprise.

Salem State鈥檚 Vice President of Institutional Advancement Cheryl Crounse said, 鈥淚鈥檓 so pleased to know that donations like Jack Welch鈥檚 are being maximized to benefit students, like Kaytlyn Justo, from our community into Salem State for them to achieve success without financial barriers.鈥
