About Charles Budrose
Charles Budrose was a professor in Salem State University鈥檚 psychology department who deeply valued the role of undergraduate research in the education of our students. From 1980 - 1996, he mentored many undergraduate students who conducted independent research projects at SSU.
The permanently endowed Charles Budrose Research Fund has been established in his honor with the purpose of fostering SSU undergraduate empirical research projects.
Available Grant Funds
$1,000 total annually, to be awarded as partial funding for student research projects on a competitive basis, with priority given to psychology majors and minors.
40% of the amount granted each year will be reserved for psychology undergraduate student applicants (majors or minors). However, if awards to psychology students do not, in any given year, equal 40% of the annual funding, the remainder of the year鈥檚 allocation may be awarded to any qualifying Salem State undergraduate student who applies.
Award Stipulations
- All student applicants must have a clear research plan that is sponsored by a faculty member.
- Department chairpersons may nominate one or more students for awards established by the Budrose Fund (see 鈥渁pplication process鈥 below).
- Funds may be requested for any phase of the research project: data collection, analysis, or
presenting results. - Please note: Any equipment purchased, in whole or in part, using an award from the Budrose Fund will become the property of Salem State University.
Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based upon the following criteria:
- Quality and detail of proposal, including with specific research objectives;
- Scientific merit and relevance to the student鈥檚 discipline;
- Strong faculty and department chair support;
- Likelihood of completing the project by the end of the spring 2024 semester.
The Budrose review committee for awarding grants will consist of the Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs or their designee and faculty and staff members who comprise the Undergraduate Research Symposium Committee.
Application Process
Undergraduate students applying for a Budrose Grant will
- Download and complete the , including a description of planned research and detailed budget.

- Attach a supporting letter from the faculty member sponsoring/mentoring the research.
- Request a nomination from their department chair.
- Submit the above documents in one email to ssu-crca@salemstate.edu with the subject 鈥淏udrose Application鈥 by 11:59 pm on Monday, January, 15, 2024.
Award Notification and Research Presentation
Applicants will be notified of their award by Monday, January 29, 2024.
Budrose awardees will be expected to present their research project at the Undergraduate Research Symposium on Research Day, Friday, May 3, 2024.
Application Deadline
All applications must be received by 11:59 pm on Monday, January 15, 2024.
